New Short Film Documents Alarming Transnational Repression in the U.S. and Around the World

Secret Chinese police stations, paid influencers on social media, targeted cyberattacks, diaspora surveillance, and physical violence

For more than 20 years, the long arm of Beijing has targeted Falun Gong in the United States and around the world in an illicit and increasingly sophisticated campaign to malign and silence. A new 20-minute documentary released today by the Falun Dafa Information Center sheds light on this alarming story.

Emily Myers from New York received threatening phone calls about her volunteer work to end human rights abuses in China. David Liang from Australia was shot multiple times en route to file a lawsuit against high-profile Chinese officials involved in human rights abuses. Dr. Peter Yuan Li from Atlanta was assaulted in his home by three Chinese-speaking intruders for creating a circumvention tool to jump the Great Firewall. These are just a few of the cases documented in the film.

“Inside China, the persecution of Falun Gong has tragically served as a macabre laboratory for horrific persecution methods that are now deployed against other groups across China by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),” says Falun Dafa Information Center executive director Levi Browde. “The same is true with targeting Falun Gong overseas: as the CCP has refined and escalated this illicit campaign in the West, it has built up a capacity to influence, manipulate, and outright suppress any group right here in the United States, and around the world.”

“Make no mistake: Falun Gong is a test case, but the end game is potentially any of us. This dangerous aspect of CCP tyranny on the world stage must be highlighted for the international community, and this new documentary does exactly that.”

Drawing upon the personal stories of citizens across North America, Europe, Australia, and Hong Kong as well as hundreds of documented incidents of transnational repression from more than 40 countries, the film traces the CCP’s international aggression from Beijing to New York City and everywhere in between.

The Long Arm of Beijing is directed by Mathias Magnason, an award-winning Swedish filmmaker and producer who previously worked for the United Nations.
