Imprisoned for a Decade, Beijing Scientist Again Sentenced for Faith

Based on an original report from Minghui

Having spent ten hellish years in prison, Mr. Shi Shaoping, 50-year-old Beijing resident and master’s degree graduate from the Photochemical Institute at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was sentenced again to nine years for practicing Falun Gong.

Arrest and Torture

Shi was seized from his home in Beijing on November 18, 2019. The police then threatened his family and refused to provide any updates about his case.

It was only until April 2021 did Shi’s younger brother receive notice that he had been sentenced to nine years. He will serve time at the Beijing No.2 Prison, which is notorious for detaining death row prisoners, prisoners with life sentences, and Falun Gong practitioners.

Prior to his latest sentencing, Shi was arrested in 2001 and sentenced to ten years. The guards at Qianjin Prison in Beijing had violent prisoners monitor and torture him, to attempt to force him to renounce his faith in Falun Gong.

The inmates often beat and verbally abused Mr. Shi. They also restricted his restroom use for an entire month, during which time he was not able to have any bowel movements.

The inmates would also open the window during the winter to expose Shi to the freezing wind, even though he only had a thin layer of clothing. In addition, he was often deprived of sleep and forced to sit on a small stool without moving for nearly 20 hours each day. These types of incidents repeated for years.

As a result, the muscles in his legs atrophied. The lack of sleep and enormous mental pressure also took a heavy toll on his health.
