Four Hubei Residents Arrested for Raising Awareness about the Persecution of Falun Gong

On January 31, 2023, four Falun Gong practitioners in Songbu Town, Macheng City, Hubei Province were arrested. Two of the arrested are still detained as of February 25, 2023.

Ms. Tao Xiai (69) Ms. Cao Guirong (60+), Ms. Yan Qing’e and Mr. Hao, were arrested in Tiemen Village (under the administration of Songbu Town) after being reported for raising awareness about the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been targeted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

The police interrogated the four practitioners at the Tiemen Village Police Station. A tall officer was reported to beat Ms. Tao, twist her arm and slam her hand against a table, resulting in her hand becoming swollen and bruised. The officer also struck her head against the wall, causing her to become disoriented. She and other practitioners were forced to press their fingerprints on case documents.

The police ransacked all four practitioners’ homes and confiscated their Falun Gong books.

Ms. Yan was released on the day of their arrest but was harassed by the police several times thereafter. Meanwhile, Ms. Tao, Ms. Cao, and Mr. Hao were transferred to the Macheng City Detention Center.

On February 17, 2023, Ms. Tao was released after spending 15 days at the detention center. Mr. Hao is still being held at the Macheng City Detention Center and Ms. Cao has been transferred to the Huanggang City Detention Center.
