Mr. Xu Baiyi, 55, Jilin

Mr. Xu Baiyi was repeatedly arrested since 1999. In 2002, he was "sentenced" to a long prison term and transferred to Jilin Prison. By 2008, he had been tortured to the point of becoming paralyzed, at which time the authorities released him. His health continued to deteriorate and Mr. Xu passed away on January 29, 2010.

Ms. Liu Lihua, 61, Shandong

In 2005, Ms. Liu was interviewed by prominent attorney Gao Zhisheng. Gao subsequently relayed her testimony in the first of his open letters to Chinese Communist Party leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao about the persecution suffered by Falun Gong practitioners in October 2005. On March 14, 2009, Ms. Liu was detained again for distributing informational materials about the persecution against Falun Gong. She was released on September 30, 2009. However, she never recovered from the abuse suffered in custody and died on the evening of January 28 in the hospital after having collapsed the previous day.

Mr. Zhang Tichao, 68, Heilongjiang

Prior to his latest detention, Mr. Zhang had been arrested on several occasions, including serving a three year labor camp sentence for practicing Falun Gong. In 2007, he was arrested again and "sentenced" to Daqing Prison. He was tortured while in custody to the point that he could not care for himself. The prison authorities released him in mid-2009, but he never recovered from the injuries incurred in custody and died on the evening of January 22, 2010.

Yu Zhongzhu, 39, Heilonjiang

On August 8, 2008, the day the Beijing Olympics opened, over a dozen officers arrested Mr. Yu, his wife, and several other practitioners. In December 2008, Mr. Yu was "sentenced" to six years in a prison camp following a sham trial. On January 14, 2010, Mr. Yu's family received a call from Tailai Prison, asking them to go to the prison hospital because he was in critical condition. He died at 10 p.m. the same day.

Mr. Tian Fujin, 59, Inner Mongolia

On June 5, 2008, prior to the Olympics, police abducted Mr. Tian, his wife and daughter (who both practice Falun Gong) from their home. In November 2008, he was "sentenced" to three years in a prison camp. On the morning of Dec 14, 2009, the prison authorities called his family to inform them that Mr. Tian was dying. They rushed to the prison and found him in a deep coma; he was taken to the hospital. He died at 10:45pm that evening and his body was immediately cremated.

Mr. Wang Baojin, 45, Liaoning

Mr. Wang was arrested by police in September 2001 when purchasing a printer, accused of running an underground print shop, and "sentenced" to ten years in a prison camp following a sham trial. On the evening of Dec 7, 2009, Wang was rushed to the hospital, unconscious and on the verge of death, but still restrained in shackles. The next day, the prison authorities notified his family that he was very ill; they rushed to the hospital and the day after he died.

Ms. Gong Hui, 57, Tianjin

Local police and security bureau officers detained Ms. Gong without a warrant on August 13, 2008, during the period of the Beijing Olympics. On September 17, 2008, she was "sentenced" to 15-months to "re-education through labor" taken to Banqiao forced labor camp. On November 9, 2008, Ms. Gong was reportedly subjected to a particularly harsh session of torture, lasting from 9:00am until 11:00pm and resulting in her near physical collapse. Unable to recover from the torture she suffered in custody, Ms. Gong died on December 4, 2009, slightly more than three weeks after her release.

Ms. Ren Jianying, 71, Beijing

In 2006, Ms. Ren was detained and "sentenced" to two years in a prison camp following a sham trial. At the camp, she was frequently deprived of sleep, forced to squat for long periods of time, and beaten by guards as they tried to force her to renounce her faith. She was released in June 2008, but never recovered her health and died on Dec 4, 2009.

Mr. Li Delong, 49, Shandong

Mr. Li had suffered from hepatitis, but his symptoms disappeared when he began practicing Falun Gong. In August 2006, Mr. Li was detained. The police tried to send him to a force labor camp for a year, but the camp refused to accept him because of his health condition. After his release, Mr. Li's liver condition further deteriorated and he died on Nov 29, 2009.

Mr. Lai Jiamiao, 60, Guangdong

In December 2007, Mr. Lai and his wife were abducted from their home. A few months later, they were both "sentenced" to three years in a prison camp. On Nov 27, 2009, prison authorities called Mr. Lai's family to inform them that he had died. It not known whether his wife, Ms. Lin Xingru, who is imprisoned herself, has been informed of her husband's death.
