Dr. Charles Lis Friends and Family Appeal for His Immediate Release
U.S. Medical Doctor Arrested in China, Faces Dubious Charges That Could Mean Up To 15 Years in Prison
SAN FRANCISCO (FDI) — Friends, family and fellow practitioners of Falun Gong held a press conference in front of the Chinese consulate on Thursday January 30, to urge the Chinese government to release Dr. Charles Li, a US citizen and resident of Menlo Park, California.
Dr. Li’s fiancée, Ms. Yeong-ching Foo, appealed for his unconditional release. “Charles is a loving and caring person.” Ms. Foo said. “He was going to spend the Chinese New Year with his parents.” His so-called “crime” is that he happens to practice Falun Gong.
Dr. Sherry Zhang, a spokesperson for the US West Falun Dafa Information Center, and a friend of Dr. Li, expressed her concern over the charges brought against him — “sabotaging” Chinese Television. “We have obtained information that many, if not all, of the Falun Gong practitioners who were charged with this crime have been severely tortured in China,” Dr. Zhang told the crowd and media gathered in front of the Chinese consulate. “I fear that this would also happen to Charles, even though he is an American citizen.”
ABC, CBS, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Jose Mercury News, San Mateo County Times, as well as many Chinese and other local media attended on the event.
