A native of Jieyang City, Guangdong Province was recently sentenced to nine years in prison for reading Falun Gong books with others.
Mr. Chen Hongyuan was arrested at Ms. Pei Zhen’s home on June 14, 2020. Six other local practitioners, most of whom were in their 70s or 80s, were also arrested.
Officers of the Rongcheng District Domestic Security Office demanded to search Chen’s home. Despite his refusal of the unlawful request, the police proceeded to search his home. Over a dozen officers, searched his home from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. that day. The operation was overseen by the Rongcheng District Police Department and the Jieyang City Police Department.
During the search, the police found many printers and Falun Gong related materials in his computer at Chen’s home. As a direct result of their findings, they escalated the charges against him in court.
Chen was beaten while being held at the Jieyang City Detention Center. He held a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was taken to the hospital for treatment in September 2020 after he became very weak.
He was sentenced to nine years and was taken to the Sihui Prison on September 11, 2021.
