Studio Owner Sentenced for Owning Calendar On Falun Gong
Calendars with information about the practice of Falun Gong are produced by editors of Minghui.org every year. They are often distributed by Falun Gong practitioners in China to deliver uncensored information about the practice, maxims from traditional Chinese Culture. This calender, dated for 2022, says "Understanding the truth is good fortune" and has the practice's principles of "Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance are Good" inscribed on the lantern.
Ms. Sun Jinhui, 47, was first arrested on June 12, 2018, after the police saw a calendar with information about Falun Gong in her photography studio. They took away the calendar, searched her studio, and confiscated four printers, cameras, two cellphones, a computer that she used for her business, as well as some Falun Gong-related materials.
Despite failing the physical examination, the police kept her at the Taian City Detention Center for a month before releasing her on a 5,000 yuan bail.
The police submitted Sun’s case to the Feicheng City Procuratorate in late May 2019. To avoid persecution, she left her hometown a month later.
When Sun returned home in early 2021 to celebrate the Chinese New Year with her family, a dozen officers broke in at around 8 p.m. on February 9 and arrested her. When she resisted the body search, officer Wang Xiansheng grabbed her hands, cuffed them behind her back, and threw her onto a bed. Her nose was injured during the arrest and she lost consciousness for a period of the arrest.
The next day, Sun was taken to the Xintai Detention Center but was rejected due to her health condition. She was released and placed under house arrest.
On July 23, 2021, the police broke into Sun’s home at 7 a.m. They then forcibly took her to the Feicheng City Court for a hearing, of which she had not been prior informed.
The judge sentenced her to two years and two months with a 10,000-yuan fine on September 22. She is now appealing the verdict.
