Thousands of sane and healthy Falun Gong practitioners have been detained in mental hospitals. Among them are teachers, judges, and other professionals who were branded as insane for exposing the facts about the persecution of Falun Gong to the public, or simply for practicing the Falun Gong exercises. In order to break their will and force them to renounce Falun Gong, hospital staff administer psychotropic drugs or other “medication” that damage the nervous system, often rendering the victims incoherent and plummeting them into horrific states of physical pain and mental anguish. This form of torture often results in permanent nerve damage or irreversible psychological damage. Many have died from such “treatment,” and countless others have suffered nervous breakdowns from the intense persecution and psychological pressure in the mental facilities.
Practitioners detained in mental hospitals are also subjected to intense brainwashing tactics to turn them against Falun Gong; they are tortured with electric shock therapy, deprived of sleep, and given large doses of powerful drugs.
The World Psychiatric Association voted in August 2002 to investigate, but Chinese authorities have repeatedly denied them access to any mental facilities.
The Chongqing City Police arrested Ms. Wang because she refused to renounce Falun Gong. On July 29, 2000, she was unlawfully taken to the Chongqing City Maojiashan Female Forced Labor Camp and sentenced to two years of hard labor. There, she was subjected to the cruelest mental and physical tortures. As a result, her health deteriorated daily, her weight dropped, and she could no longer look after herself. In the name of treating her “illnesses,” the camp police ordered seven or eight inmates who were drug addicts to force-feed her with an unknown drug, causing her to lapse into a coma.
Seeing that Ms. Wang was near death, the labor camp sent her home in order to avoid responsibility. After returning home, Ms. Wang remained in critical condition, spitting up blood and passing blood in her stool. Her limbs became extremely weak. She also had difficulty breathing, coughed, vomited, and had diarrhea. She felt sharp pains in her abdomen due to ascites [accumulation of serous fluid in the abdomen], and she could not sleep at night. She died on September 23, 2002.
Hou Jinyuan is a 59-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Baiyanghu Villange in Hunan Province.
The authorities detained Ms. Hou several times to attempt to coerce her to stop practicing Falun Gong. Eventually, she went on a hunger strike in prison to protest her detention without trial. In response, she was transferred to the psychiatric ward, where police injected her with an unknown drug. Her tongue and forehead went numb. By the third day and after continued injections, a nurse quietly told her “Auntie, you have to eat. If we continue giving you these injections, your whole body and all of your organs with wither and you will suffer agony until death.” Ms. Hou still did not submit to the demands of the police, so the injections continued. By the fifth day, both of her legs were numb and she could no longer stand. By the end of the month, her legs were paralyzed. After another two weeks, the drugs caused her to go completely blind.
64-year-old Mo Shuijin was sent to a forced labor camp and beaten until she coughed up blood. Afraid that she would expose the horrendous torture she faced in the labor camp, the camp officials injected her with a euthanasia drug. She collapsed and died.
“... the police put handcuffs and fetters on me and sent me to a hospital. The police asked the doctor to forcibly administer an intravenous drip into my body. When the drip was going on, I felt that my blood vessels were so painful, as if they were being torn apart, and my heart beat violently. At that moment, I was thinking that if I were not a person with beliefs that made me unshakable and tolerant, I would have died of a heart attack. Soon after I was forcibly given the intravenous drip, I was sent to the Babaoshan Police Substation, and then later released.
“Ever since I was forced to undergo the intravenous drip, the left side of my body has frequently twitched. My nerves felt numb and painful. I became very emotional and depressed, and always felt like I was under a lot of pressure. Often I felt that I could not bear it anymore and would fall apart. Later, I felt Iwas losing my memory. I always felt sleepy. Then, I lost my memory of what I had seen and heard in long-term detention. When I returned to France, I saw some pictures of Falun Gong practitioners who had been tortured. It jogged my memory and I started to recall the whole miserable experience...”
“Not long after I had been admitted to the mental hospital, my work unit sent in another practitioner. After she was injected with drugs in an intensive care ward, she first fell unconscious, and then later began to hallucinate. She squatted on the floor and tried to pick up things from all over the floor, claiming that it was covered with bugs. I felt so bad for her and took her back to her bed. After a while, she repeated the same process again. They wrote both of our names on the blackboard in the ward office and requested that hospital staff strictly monitor our medications. I was detained in the mental hospital for over four months, during which I was always dizzy and drowsy from the daily torture of the medicine. I also felt nauseous and weak, and had edema all over my body. My whole body had become totally disfigured. What was even more painful was that I was required every morning to go with the mental patients to a “club” for the so-called “mental treatments,” which included singing and dancing. There were also times when my mind was in chaos, and I felt that I could no longer bear the psychological stress. It was as if I could no longer stand it for even another minute. I was also afraid that I would become unable to control myself, so I kept telling myself not to go crazy. In persecuting Falun Gong, Jiang Zemin’s regime has used torture as a means to turn good, innocent people into mentally ill people... upon leaving the hospital, my eyes began to fester, and even opening them became difficult. The insides and outsides of my ears also started to fester and ooze yellow fluid, as did my scalp and neck. It caused itchiness and simply heart-wrenching pain...”

“... They tied Lu Hongfeng to the bed and injected and force-fed her with large doses of medicines that can be damaging to the central nervous system. According to a doctor with the surname of Yong, Lu was forced to take a total of twenty-four tablets of a medicine capable of causing a person to lose consciousness for several days. Fifty days of such inhumane torture drove Lu to become mentally traumatized. The drugs and physical torture she endured left her in an extremely weak state. At the end of July, Lu was brought home. She passed away on September 6th, 2000.”
